Popularly known as “Black Gold,” black peppers are obtained from the berries of the ‘Piper nigrum’ vine. Originating from Malabar in Kerala, they were so invaluable in ancient times that they were used as currency. Green berries are harvested, and dried till they turn dark brown or black. The flavour of ground black peppers blends quickly into food vis-à-vis other formats. A sprinkle of this savoury spice gives a diverse profile of woody, floral and citrusy notes. They have a tingling and intense aroma. They could stimulate digestion, relieve cold and cough. They are said to reduce cholesterol levels, boost brain function, control blood sugar levels, enable weight loss, and have antioxidant and anti-bacterial properties.
