Popularly known as "Black Gold," black peppers are obtained from the berries of the vine ‘Piper nigrum’. Originating from Malabar in Kerala, they were so invaluable in ancient times that they were used as currency. Green berries are harvested, and dried till they turn dark brown or black. The coarseness of crushed peppers adds a unique texture and visual appeal to the dish. A sprinkle of this savoury spice imparts a diverse flavour profile of woody, floral and citrusy notes. They have a tingling and intense aroma. They could stimulate digestion, and relieve cold and cough. They are said to reduce cholesterol levels, boost brain function, control blood sugar levels, enable weight loss, and have antioxidant and anti-bacterial properties.
