Mane Kancor Enhances Sustainability Through Rainforest Alliance Certification Programme in Ududumbara, Sri Lanka

Mane Kancor in collaboration with Ceylon Eco Spices Pvt Ltd, has successfully launched a Rainforest Alliance Certification programme to promote sustainable pepper farming in the Ududumbara area of Sri Lanka. This initiative aims to empower local farmers in Madugalla village, a region known for its organic agricultural practices and diverse crops. The programme has directly benefited 54 farmers, improving their livelihoods by guiding them on best agricultural practices, including pepper cultivation, pest management, and soil conservation.

The programme, covering 115 acres of farmland, has provided these farmers with expert training and resources. Workshops were held on sustainable farming techniques and pest control. Awareness programmes on environmental protection, including tree planting and the distribution of fruit plants were also done. Grafted mango trees were distributed to the pepper farms. Soil analysis and customised nutrient recommendations helped to improve productivity of the farms.

The programme anticipates additional pepper production from the region due to the improvement in productivity. This initiative contributes significantly to the global spice supply chain ensuring positive environmental and social returns. The programme, certified by Control Union Inspections Sri Lanka, continues to support the region’s farmers in adopting eco-friendly agricultural practices, fostering long-term sustainability for both the community and the environment.
