Clove Whole

This native of Indonesia is the dried floral bud of the ‘Syzygium aromaticum’ tree and grows well in humid climates. The bud changes colour from pale green to peach and is ready for harvest when it turns red. After drying, it turns dark brown with a reddish tinge. Clove was used to sweeten breath as early as 200 BC in China, and in some cultures, it is planted to commemorate the birth of a child. It has a pungent and astringent taste with undertones of sweetness and a strong aromatic odour. Clove could help treat diarrhoea, toothache, nausea, and common cold and improves blood glucose levels and liver function. Eugenol, the active component in clove, is said to have antiseptic and anaesthetic abilities.
