Mentha piperita (Peppermint) belongs to the Labiatae family and is a perennial herb widely cultivated in the world. It is a popular herb that can be used in numerous forms (i.e. oil, leaf, leaf extract, and leaf water). The Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil is obtained by the steam distillation of the above-ground parts of the Mentha piperita plant. Its major components are L-Menthol and menthofuran. The essential oil of peppermint is a colourless to pale yellow free-flowing liquid, having a cooling, minty, sweet, fresh mentholic and peppermint-like odour. Peppermint oil possesses a fresh, sharp, menthol odour and a pungent taste followed by a cooling sensation.
